About Dr. Shawn Derritt
I was raised in foster care from age nine to eighteen due to my mother’s mental health issues. Growing up without a father, I was fortunate to receive support from strong men who significantly shaped my life. I understand firsthand the lasting effects of fatherlessness and the quiet struggles many men face, which is why I am passionate about providing counseling services and facilitating men's support groups.
I've faced tough times, including a failed marriage, but I also experienced growth and happiness through a second marriage and the joy of building a blended family. As a first-generation college graduate and the first in my family to earn a doctoral degree, I know what it takes to carve a new path without a guide. My personal journey fuels my commitment to helping men find stability so they can heal, grow, and lead with strength and integrity.
I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and my Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of Kansas. I later completed my Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) in Higher Education Administration at the University of Missouri–Kansas City. My academic journey—being a first-generation college graduate and the first in my family to achieve a doctoral degree—demonstrates perseverance, discipline, and a strong dedication to excellence.
In addition to my formal education, I am a Certified Life Coach through Symbiosis Coaching, an International Coaching Federation (ICF)-accredited program. This combination of clinical training and life coaching certification allows me to blend evidence-based counseling methods with practical, future-focused coaching strategies when working with men and couples.

Introducing: Couples Collective
Couples Collective is a supportive community for couples in the Kansas City Metro area seeking to strengthen their relationships, improve communication, and deepen emotional connections. Led by husband-and-wife team Dr. Shawn Derritt, a Certified Life Coach, and Gloria Derritt, a Licensed Professional Counselor, the Collective combines clinical expertise with real-life experience. Through our counseling services, couples receive practical tools rooted in Gottman Couples Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to navigate conflict, rebuild trust, and foster intimacy. Additionally, participants can benefit from a men's support group, as well as the encouragement of fellow couples committed to growth.
